This John Murray first edition (1986) of Between the Woods and the Water is of interest to collectors of Patrick Leigh Fermor, 20th century travel writing, and British literary non-fiction.

About: A near fine first edition in a good dust jacket. The boards are clean and square, the text block tight with bright, fresh pages. The jacket front retains its vivid colour and presents very well; the rear panel has a tear at the foot of the spine and some further wear. A collectable copy of a book that is increasingly difficult to find in any jacket.

Synopsis: First edition John Murray imprint in original dust jacket; the second volume of Leigh Fermor's celebrated trilogy recounting his 1933–34 walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople.

Review: Patrick Leigh Fermor's Between the Woods and the Water (1986) is the second volume of his trilogy describing his youthful walk across Europe in 1933–34. Picking up from A Time of Gifts, it follows Fermor from the Hungarian plains through Transylvania to the Iron Gates of the Danube. Written with extraordinary prose richness and elegiac power, it is widely regarded as one of the finest works of travel writing in the English language. The trilogy was completed posthumously with The Broken Road (2013).
